Lakeland Walker

Ullswater map

Walks around UllswaterThere are miles of Bridleways linked to ‘Steamer Routes’ that cater for all abilities from the might of Helvellyn Mountain range at the Southern Reach with some of Wainwright’s most famous walks such as Striding Edge to the remote valley of Martindale which offers access to an expanse of seldom-walked fells. Take yourself back into the footsteps of Wordsworth on the lakeshore walk which immortalised the Lenten lily thanks to his world famous poem “Daffodils”

Below is a small selection of ‘Steamer’ Routes for you to enjoy and down online. A more detailed guide of each of these walks can be purchased from our Pier Houses or our little Pocket History Book which has fabulous facts and figures, famous faces and places as well as a ‘I did the Howtown Walk’ certificate on the reverse cover.
Always check the Weather Forecast and Boat Times on the day and take plenty of water, especially on hot days.

There are a series of guided walks throughout the year with National Park Volunteer Rangers on hand to take you through fascinating facts and figures en route. All the guided walks during the regular season are non bookable, i.e. 'just turn up'. However please note that these Ranger Walks are restricted on numbers and we do advise people to turn up early to avoid disappointment. For more information please visit your local Tourist Information Centre or download the programme here.   You can also download the Adventure Capital / Sprayway Family Walks from Patterdale leaflet here
