Ullswater 'Steamers' are closed until Thursday 3rd December. If you have already booked standard day tickets or a private cruise, we will contact you to transfer your booking. Online ticket sales are open to pre-purchase cruise tickets from 3rd December. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Please read our pre-arrival information to help you plan your visit. Thank you for your continued support.

At Ullswater 'Steamers' our mission for over 160 years is to welcome you on board and we place the utmost importance on the safety and wellbeing of our passengers and our people. We have strengthened our health and safety measures to reduce the risk associated with the presence of COVID-19. These are in line with Government advice and the requirements of local health authorities. Some of the measures set out below may be clearly visible to you from the moment you arrive at our premises and others require patience and consideration from passengers to help ensure that everyone has a great day out.

We will be limiting capacity on board our boats and in our shops. The on board saloons will remain closed. When you board the boat you will be allocated a seat. You must stay in this seat for the duration of the cruise, even if the weather changes. Please wear appropriate clothing. Seating will be on the upper decks outside and under the canopy. 

We thank you for your patience and understanding whilst ‘Business is unusual’ and request you are kind and considerate to your fellow passengers, our staff, and the local community whilst we operate under these new procedures and guidelines. We would like to say a massive thank you for all your continued support throughout this difficult time.

Ticket Purchases

Tickets must be pre-booked in order for us to manage capacity. We will be limiting capacity on board and therefore require all customers to book tickets in advance. Tickets will be dated and timed. If you arrive without a pre-booked ticket it is likely that we will not have room for you on board. Tickets will be available to purchase until 9am on the day of travel.

Please note, due to social distancing measures you have to purchase a minimum of 2 tickets per sailing. Please note the '2 Adult Ticket' is for TWO adults so you only need to buy ONE ticket. If you need to add more adults, you can do this after you have added the 2 Adult Ticket to your basket. 

To ensure compliance with latest legislation, please only complete your reservation

  1. If your party consists on no more than one household or social bubble AND
  2. You are adhering to the travel advice restrictions in place from the tier in which you reside. Tier 3 are not permitted to travel unless it is essential.

Please note we are operating a 'Track & Trace' system as required by law. You will be asked to scan a QR code or register your details on arrival at the attraction if you are travelling with us or using the facilities.

Local Restrictions Update

From the 2nd of December, the UK will be placed under additional Tier local lockdown restrictions. This guidance is due to be reviewed on the 16th of December. Ullswater Steamers will reopen as planned in Tier 2 on Wednesday 2nd December.

Customers who reside in Tier 3 areas that have already booked tickets up until 16th December, please contact us to book alternative dates or request a refund. We have taken this decision to act responsibly based on Government advice for travel and as a duty of care for you and your families, our staff, the local community, and fellow passengers.

Please DO NOT pre book a ticket or turn up on site to purchase a ticket if you are from a Tier 3 area. We reserve the right to refuse entry and you will not be offered a refund on the day.

Tier 3 areas are advised against travelling to other parts of the UK, including for overnight stays other than where necessary, such as for work, education, youth services, to receive medical treatment, or because of caring responsibilities. You can travel through other areas as part of a longer journey.’

We will review the situation based on Government announcements on the 16th of December. Please note that the UK situation and Government legislation can change at any time and we apologise in advance if the rules change at short notice. We are constantly monitoring the situation and keeping up to date with the latest Government advice. The current legislation is enforceable by law. We have a zero-tolerance policy to protect you, other guests, and our staff. Our priority is to keep you safe and help to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Please contact us immediately if your booking is affected. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause but it is a legal requirement to help combat the spread of Covid-19. We reserve the right to refuse your booking on arrival with no refund offered if you break these rules. Please stay safe.

Please note:

  • Tickets must be booked in advance. Tickets are date and time specific. 
  • All passengers are required to wear a face covering by law whilst on the premises including on board the boats, on the pier and inside the pier house/shop areas. Please bring a suitable face covering with you. There are some exemptions under UK law click here. We do have face coverings available for a small charge at the pier houses.
  • Passengers are not permitted to consume food or beverages on board.
  • Some facilities will have limits in place.
  • Passengers will not be able to board at Howtown Pier.
  • Passengers will be seated on the upper outside decks and canopy areas. You must remain in this seat for the duration of the journey, even if the weather changes. On board saloons remain closed.
  • Please use contactless payment for café and shop items.
  • We will be retaining customer records under the rules associated with NHS Track & Trace

In addition to essential 2m social distancing, the following measures will be in place:

  • If there are more than 6 persons in your household bubbles, you will be split into smaller groups to be seated on the boats.
  • Tickets must be purchased in advance on our website.
  • All cruise options will have a set time for departure/arrival.
  • We will be restricting the number of people in the pier house to 2 persons (or 2 households/families) and 1 household in the toilet area.
  • There will be a one-way system in operation on the piers.
  • Sneeze guards have been installed to protect our staff/passengers in retail and café areas.
  • Takeaway cups only, no refill cups.
  • No food or drink to be consumed on the boats.
  • Our toilets will be open with extra measures in place.
  • Be considerate and wash hands thoroughly and regularly.
  • Use hand sanitizer stations where they are provided.
  • We have strengthened all of our cleaning and health and safety routines.
  • Staff will be wearing PPE for certain tasks.
  • Card and contactless payment only.
  • On-board catering and saloons will remain closed. Seating is only available on the upper decks.
  • Please purchase a car park ticket online with your boat ticket. (Glenridding only)
  • If you feel unwell, please stay at home.

Can I can book a ticket?

What happens if I turn up and don't have a pre-booked ticket? You must pre-book tickets online. We cannot guarantee you a ticket if you turn up on the day.

Can I do the Howtown walk? You can book a single ticket to Howtown on the Yellow and Blue 9.45 cruises. 

Is there anywhere to eat at Howtown? Yes! You can head to the Howtown Hotel for hot drinks, sandwiches, cakes or even a beer.

Do I have to wear a mask or face covering ? Yes - All passengers are required to wear a face covering by law whilst on the premises including on board the boats, on the pier and inside the pier house/shop areas. Please bring a suitable face covering with you. There are some exemptions under UK law click here. We do have face coverings available for a small charge at the pier houses.

Can I get on the boat at Howtown? No, you can disembark at Howtown but you cannot board here until further notice. 

Do I have to book Aira Force? No you don't; their main car park has spaces on a first come first served basis.

Can I bring a dog? Dogs are allowed on board, please purchase a ticket online for £1.

Is there a minimum person policy on booking tickets ? Yes, due to limited capacity on-board we cannot accept single ticket holders. Adult Tickets are for Two Adults. Please purchase ONE Ticket for TWO Adults. We have also split tickets into Child, 1 Adult & 1 Child, Family ( 2 + 2 ), Under 5, Four Adults and you can add Dogs and extra Adults and Glenridding Car park tickets on the booking pop up page before you check out. 

Can I bring a bike? Unfortunately we do not have space for bikes (or folding bikes) until the restrictions are lifted. Bike racks are available at Pooley Bridge and Glenridding pier houses.

What happens if I miss my cruise departure time? Please don’t be late for your sailing because we probably will not be able to transfer you onto a later trip that day.

What happens if I feel unwell before my visit? Please stay at home and email us to re-schedule your visit.

What happens if you cancel sailings? If we cancel sailings on the day that you are booked to visit us, we will automatically refund you through our online booking system. Your payment will be credited back to your original payment card within 5 working days.

Are the toilets open in the Pier Houses? Yes they are, but social distancing measures must be observed so only one person at a time please (unless you are from the same household or family group).

Are the toilets open on board? They are for emergency use only.

Are the saloons on board open or closed? The saloons on board will remain closed. Passengers will be seated on the upper decks and canopy areas. You must remain in this seat for the entirety of the journey, even if the weather changes.

Can I bring a picnic with me? If you wish, but do not attempt to eat or drink on board the boat as face coverings must be in place at all times. Please also take all your rubbish home with you and be sure to recycle!

Am I allowed alcohol on board? No. Eating and drinking on board is not allowed and you must wear your face covering at all times. If you appear to be intoxicated we reserve the right to refuse entry and no refunds will be given.

Our booking is for more than 6 people in our household bubbles - can we sit together? No, if there are more than 6 persons in your household bubbles, you will be split into smaller groups to be seated on the boats. This is to ensure social distancing measures are adhered to. You must remian seated and wear your face covering at all times. 

Can I use an accommodation 10% privilege voucher? We are sorry but we cannot accept any of these vouchers for the 2020 season. Our new ways of working have reduced our capacity to under 30% and our income. We apologise for the inconvenience. If things return to normal we will review the situation. 

Can I use my 50% off voucher from Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway? No, currently we have suspended the use of these vouchers until such a time that we can return our capacity to normal. Keep hold of your voucher though and we will redeem it when we are accepting these again! 

Can I use my complimentary voucher? We request you get in touch with us and we will transfer to 2021 season.

Is entry still free for Blue Peter Badge holders? We are sorry but we cannot accept these until further notice.

I have a Prosecco and Cruise gift voucher or a monetary gift voucher how can I book a ticket online? We ask you to email us with your voucher details and we can book you on a cruise. 

Can I book tickets through Viator, Get Your Guide and other third-party sellers? We have suspended ticket sales through third-party sellers until further notice. 

I am a season ticket holder, can I still come? Yes, but places are limited daily to the 9.45 cruise timeslots only. You must pre-book a ticket online. We will be contacting our season tickets holders shortly to provide them with the details how to do this using a link unique to you. Please bear with us. 

Can I buy a bus and boat ticket? No, we have suspended our Stagecoach Bus & Boat tickets until further notice 

Can I buy a single ticket to Howtown? Yes, but we have a limited number available on the Blue and Yellow 9.45 departures from Glenridding and Pooley Bridge ONLY.
