Pooley Bridge had stood the test of time until the arrival of a storm named Desmond. In 2015 Storm Desmond swept through the village of Pooley Bridge, and indeed much of Cumbria, bringing record-breaking rainfall that resulted in Pooley Bridge collapsing into the River Eamont.
It was 12 months ago when work started on the replacement bridge. Residents and visitors alike watched on as the new stainless steel structure began to take shape over the river.
The temporary footbridge which connected both sides of the valley was removed back in September, allowing the new bridge to take centre stage as it welcomed pedestrians.
Pooley Bridge opened this morning, Friday 23rd October 2020, to all traffic.
