Launch Of The Ullswater Heritage Knowledge Bank

A very special and unique event is planned to take place on Wednesday 29th September: a cruise on Ullswater, offered by Ullswater Steamers, to inaugurate a new Ullswater Heritage Knowledge Bank.

Exactly one year after the concept was first approved by Friends of the Ullswater Way (FOUW) Trustees, a dynamic, living, user-friendly, digitized Ullswater Heritage Knowledge Bank and website will be launched, containing a diversity of images, stories, photos and memories voluntarily contributed by the communities living within the Ullswater Valley.

FOUW expects that the material collected will create a living archive of the Ullswater community’s rich cultural heritage and spark a deep awareness and pride in our heritage, of interest to everyone: local residents and visitors alike. It should inspire all communities within the Valley to take special care of their inheritance.

Guests will, prior to boarding, be able to visit at Glenridding pier a FOUW pop-up exhibition of 6 panels explaining the origin and content of the Knowledge Bank. After boarding, during the one and a quarter hour cruise on the iconic Ms Raven, the guests will be able to mingle with all those that have submitted articles, photos and memories to the Knowledge Bank.

Lord Richard Inglewood, Patron of the Friends of Ullswater Way, will formally launch the Knowledge Bank and Website in the presence of over 100 members of the local community.

The Bank is designed by our Community, created by our Community, managed by our Community, for our Community.

Tim Clarke, the Chair of FOUW said: ‘FOUW genuinely believes this pioneering initiative will transform our communities’ understanding and appreciation of their culture and heritage. We hope that over time it will be expanded and maybe even provoke similar initiatives elsewhere in the Lakes. We sincerely thank all the volunteers and institutions who have made this possible.’
